WAIPUKURAU, Sept. 16. The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau Borough Council was held this evening, the Mayor, Mr 1. W. N. Mackie, presiding over Crs, H. A. Martin, J. McCarthy, R. W. Carpenter, J. L. Brathwaite, G. J. Bromell and J. Windeli. The clerk-engineer, Mr H. B. Smart, was also present.
The Central Hawke’s Bay Electric Power Board wrote advising that consideration of the council’s letter regarding the erection of a power pole at the Ruataniwha street railway crossing had been deferred until the board’s next monthly meeting—Received. The matter of replacing the broken water-meters at the Waipnkurau Hospital was left to the engineer. The Mayor, the ( r McCarthy, and the town clerk were appointed to represent the council at a meeting of the Waipnkurau health c.’i'ip campaign erg.-ni .fion.
Accounts totalling £1763 14/- were passed for payment. The council decided to tar-seal the whole width of the eastern end of Ruataniwha street, the work to be put in hand in the summer months.
a deputation consisting of Messrs Brian Boys and C. R. Watson, of the Central Hawke’s Bay Aero Club waited on the council and explained the steps that have been taken regarding the purchase of a landing ground at Waipnkurau. The council decided to make a grant of £lO, the Mayor pointing out that such grounds would be of great benefit to both town and country.
The Mayor stated that with Cr. Martin he had conferred with a sub-com-mittee of the Waipnkurau Chamber of Commerce concerning the borough’s representation on the Central Hawke’s Bay Electric Power Board. After a lengthy discussion, the council decided to write to the Power Board asking that body to consider favourably and co-operate with the Borough Council in making an application to the Minister lor additional representation lor Waipnkurau on the board. It was also decided to express regret that the Power Board bad seen fit to bring the council mto a controversy arising out of an anonymous letter in the Press and not emanating in any Way from the council. The Mayor indicated three points
under which he considered the borough should be entitled to greater representation—namely, consumption, revenue provided, and population. The town clerk placed figures before ths council showing that in 1934, when ths borough generated its own power, the unit cost of production was 4.92 d. and the charge lOd. to consumers. In 1935, under the Power Board, the cost per unit of production was 3<d. and the charge to consumers 8.5 d.
