WAIPAWA NOTES

Death of Early Settler

From Our Own Correspondent. WAIPAWA, Sept. 15.

The death occurred at the Waipawa District Hospital on Friday morning of Mrs Sarah Petrowski, relict of the late G. A. Petrowski, at the age of 71 years. The deceased was laid aside some time ago by a stroke, and although she rallied the improvement was only temporary. The late 'Mrs Petrowski had lived in the Waipawa district practically the whole of her life and was a very well-known and highly respected member of the community. A family of four sons and two daughters are left—Mrs C. Donghi (Waipawa), Mrs F. Magnusson (Tikokino), and Messrs W., Albert, Percy and 0. Petrowski — and the sympathy of the community will go out to them in their loss. The funeral took place in Hadley Cemetery on Saturday afternoon. Following on a proposal made at the last quarterly meeting of the Waipawa Chamber of Commerce that a permanent installation of coloured lights should be made in the town area so that the lights could be switched on on Saturday nights and on special occasions, the cost of such installation to be met by public subscription, and the cost of maintenance and the lighting charge by the borough, a committee was set up to ascertain what support would be forthcoming for the proposal. A canvass has now been made and practically the whole of the amount required has been promised. This result is very gratifying to the promoters of the scheme, and it only remains now for the council to adopt the scheme and have the work put in hand. Messrs. F. J. Douglas and A. Wright, Government valuers, were engaged on Friday and Saturday last in carrying out a revaluation of properties in High street, Waipawa. A most successful dance organised by the pupils and staff of the Waipawa District High School in aid of the library fund was held in the Concert Hall on Friday evening. Music for dancing was provided by Messrs. H. Weedon, Holloway, and Scotty Tawhi, and Mr Paul Edwards very capably arried out the duties of M.C. A very dainty supper was provided. Although the attendance was not large the function was a most enjoyable one. and an increase in the library fund will result.
