OLD RACING WRITER

Mr. J. Chadwick Praised At the annual meeting of the Auckland Racing Club a deserving tribute was paid by Mr C. E. Major to Mr Joseph Chadwick, wherein he stated that throughout a long and active career of about 60 years in racing circles Mr Chadwick was known as one of the best judges of horses, a good horseman, a good handicapper, honest, geneious, and one of the very best of sporting writers under the pseudonym of “Spectator.” Air Major also called attention to the fact that Mr Chadwick was the only racing historian in New Zealand, in that he had completed and published its history from its first beginning in 1840 to the time of publication in 1906. •Apart from his many activities, his work alone is the fullest evidence of his deep interest in racing, this apart from his industry in collecting the great volume of data the work discloses, and his conscientiousness in sorting the oats from the chaff, so that the truth would be handed down to posterity. The speaker then appealed to the president, Mr Oliver Nicholson, and tho executive, as an evidence of some recognition of the author’s services, to elect him a life member of the club. The president replied that the matter would be given the fullest consideration. For more than 46 years Mr Chadwick was a contributor to “The Press,” tho “New Zealand Referee,” and the “Weekly Press,” and was the author of “Men of Mark in New Zealand.” Of recent years ho has had, on account of failing ‘eyesight, to give up the Work he loved and did so well.
