PUBLICITY FOR BANKS
A Lead in Australia WELL-PLANNED ADVERTISING Many years ago American bankers broke away from the traditional British practice of reticence tinder criticism. In Australia, too, the instinct of selfpreservation has induced bankers to cease ignoring the assertions and arguments of persons who call for a drastic reformation of the banking system. In commencing a recent address of Sir James Grose (chairman of the Asso. eiated Banks), the contributor of the “Banking and Finance” feature in “The Accountants’ Journal” remarks :— “We are pleased to note that a leading representative of the trading banks has at last broken the traditional policy of silence in relation to the policy and practice of banks in the Dominion. A move in this direction was begun some years ago in Australia and has progressed considerably. The trading banks in the Commonwealth not only have provision made for watching public statements on the platform and in the Press affecting the policy and working of tho banks and setting out of the banks’ views in reply, but they indulge in dignified but attractive advertising. In their advertisements they detail the various functions and services they are prepared to perform on behalf of the public, and set out what they believe to be their claims to public support.”
