CIVIL SERVICE CUTS
Public Protest in Paris THWARTED BY POLICE (Received 20, 11.55 a.m.) PARIS, July 19. Despite an official ban, civil servants determined to liold a mass demonstration of protest against reductions of pay, but were circumvented by 6000 mounted and foot police on duty, detachments of which repeatedly charged and arrested 500, restoring order early in the evening without grave incident. The dimensions of the meeting were automatically reduced by locking all underground railway exits. The encounters were never more than senfi I s. police buffeting with gloved hands nnd demonstrators retaliating with fists.
