HASTINGS SCOTS

The Monthly Ingleside ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME The monthly ingleside of. the. Hastings and District Scots’ Society was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Market street. There was a good attendance of members and ' quite a number of visitors among whom were the RevMr Miliar, Mr and Mrs L. J. Harvey, and Mrs J. Hamilton, from Auckland. Chief H. W. C- Baird presided. An interesting feature of the programme was two short addresses contributed by two very able speakers, the Rev. D. J. A. Shaw and Mr H. E. Grainger. Mr Shaw’s address was entitled “Impressions of Scotland.” The speaker in a very short space of time covered a very large part of the Homeland. In describing the ■ beautiful features of Scotland, her mountains, her glens, her lakes and her rivers, Mr Shaw poured forth in fluent oratory such affectionate praise as can only come from an accomplished speaker. Of his visits to the various cities and towns, including Edinburgh, where he attended the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and Inverness, the birthplace of his father, Mr Shaw made tome interesting remarks. At St. Andrew’s he visited the distinguished golf links, but, he remarked, “1 did not ‘putt’ the ball.” At the conclusion of hi s address Mr Shaw was heartily applauded? “A Trip to China and Japan” was Mr Grainger’s subject, and was a brief survey of a trip he and Mrs Grainger had made to China and Japan very recently. Owing to the limited amount of time the speaker had at his disposal he dealt mainly with his sojourn in China. The speaker, in very able manner, described the characteristics of the people more than those of the country. Mr Grainger’s address proved interesting and educative, and merited loud applause. Chief Baird thanked both speakers for their kindness.

Others on the programme were: Dance, Fljng, Misses Gladys Smyth, H. Millar and Pat Over; song, Mr T. Johnston; recitation, Mrs Guthrie; recitation, Mr P. J. Priest; song, Miss Penman; duet, Miss Collins and Mr Bryant; song, Mr Bryant. The dancers were the pupils of Miss Gladys Smyth, Miss Collins was accompanist.

After supper dancing followed, Messrs Lord and Warren and Pipers Watts and Bruce played for the dancing. Councillor McMillan was M.C.
