WIMBLEDON TENNIS
NOTABLE N.Z. VICTORY Defeat of Germans in Doubles MALFROY-STEDMAN SUCCESS (Received 26, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Juno 25. The most notable performance of to-day’s play in the Wimbledon tennis tournament was that the New Zealand pair, Malfroy and Stedman, defeated the Germans, Henkel and Lund, in the first round of the men’s doublos. The New Zealanders found the Germans at sea on the slippery surface, but the latter improved to win the third set. Henkel, it will be remembered, defeated both Crawford and McGrath (Australia) in the recent Davis Cup singles. Lund played in the German doubles combination against the Australians.
A few minutes before play was due to start, a thunderstorm broke over Wimbledon, causing dismay on account of its being ladies’ day, and soaking many in unsheltered seats. Only a couple of hours’ play was possible on tho covered courts, when rain again stopped play. Results were:— WOMEN’S SINGLES. First Round.
