W.D.F.U. MEETING

Work of League of Nations The monthly meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was presided over in Hastings by Mrs. Joli, a good number of members attending. An apology was received from Mrs. Thompson, treasurer. The branch was asked to cater for the dog trials held under the auspices of the Farmers’ Union, and it was decided to accede to the request. Mem. bore collected £3 10/- for the Cancer Research FundMrs. Joli then introduced Mrs. de Castro, of Havelock North, who gave a most interesting and enlightening talk on the League of Nations. The speaker told of thq activities of the League, the good it had accomplished during the time it haa been in power and how it was formed to help nations towards peace. She quoted instances of the League’s being instrumental in wiping out incipient conflict and so preventing what might have developed into something much more serious. Mrs. de Castro was followed with keen interest by members, who were very grateful to her for attending and explaining so clearly what the Leaguv of Nations stood for and the work it was doing for the good of humanity. At the conclusion of her able address, Mrs. de Castro was accorded a very hearty vote of this being carried by acclamation. Miss McCprkiudale judged the com. petition for th? best josy, and bad dif-

Acuity in making her decision, as each entry was really beautiful. The following awards were eventually made: Miss Jean Joli 1, Miss Neilsen 2, Mrs. Norwell 3 (eight entries). Mrs. Watson won first place for the best flower in the garden.

It was decided to hold a “shop” on Saturday next at a place to be advertised later to help raise funds for the branch. A delicious tea was served by Mrs. George Joli, Mrs. Norwcll and Mrs. D. Boyle. A vote of thanks to Miss McCorkindale concluded the meeting.
