CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF Macdonald-Smith Scores a 66 COURSE RECORD BROKEN 'By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received 25, 12.5 p.m.) LONDON, June 24. Macdonald-Smith, with a round of 66, leads the first qualifying round of the British open golf championship, play in which began to-day. Play is taking place on the Gullane and Muirfield courses, Edinburgh.. Macdonald - Smith’s round broke the Gullane course record. Half the field played on the Gullane and the remainder on the Muirfield course. This will be reversed to-morrow, after which the first 100 and all tieing for 100th place will participate in the competition proper, which begins at Muirfield on Wednesday. The Gullane course measures 6600 yards, with a bogey of 74, and Muirfield 6800 yards, with a bogey of 78. The American, Macdonald-Smith, who lias knocked at the door of the British open championship for the past ten years, had a most brilliant first qualifying round. His 66 was 10 under tao scratch score. His driving and approaching were so accurate that he only twice faced a long putt. He hat only two fives, one two and six threes, and the rest were fours. Occasionally he found the rough, but recovered superbly.

The 70 of Percy Alliss was convincing, as it was attained despite several visits to the rough. Lawson Little drove a terrific distance. Nevertheless, lie had to work hard to keep below 80. He runs some risk of not qualifying. Burton, who leaped from obscurity to fame in a single season, is purely a self-made Lancashire golfer, who began as a caddie and is now one of the longest and most accurate hitters in first-class golf. He had the best score over the actual championship course. T. H. Cotton gave an impressive display; be was only one stroke behind, along with Lees, the Yorkshire champion. Detailed scores were:— GULLANE COURSE.
