MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

Official Opening Ceremony

PERFORMED BY MINISTER

The additions to the Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Hastings, •were officially opened by Sir Alexander Young, Minister of Health, this afternoon in the presence of a large attendance of the public. The function took place at the main entrance to the hospital, and between the two central pillars was draped a large red cross. The visitors included members of the various local bodies in tho district, accomnanied by their wives, Bishop

Williams, Ministers of the various denominations and representatives of many public organisations, Mr. C, 0. Morse, chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Hospital Board, presided, and addresses were given by Messrs. H. M. Campbell, M.P., A. E. Jull, M.P., G. A. Maddison (Mayor of Hastings), and C. Duff, a Hastings representative on the Hospital Board. On the platform were also sisters and nurses of the hospital, and Mrs. M. Tuohy, who took an active part in the collection of funds for the erection of the original hospital. Mr. Morse extended a warm welcome to the Minister and to the public assembled. He expressed His great pleasure at being privileged to preside on such an occasion. In tho new additions the skilful designing by the architects had been wonderfully displayed, while the workmanship equalled that to be seen anywhere

The citizens of Hastings and of the county had reason to feel honestly proud of their representatives on the Hospital Board, who had striven so hard to have achieved the fine additions to their hospital which the Minister was to open. Mr. Morse expressed the opinion that if it had not been for their determined efforts such a function would not be taking place. The buildings were afterwards opened for inspection. The remarks of the Minister and the other speakers will be reported in tomorrow’s issue.
