Powers of Coroners.
Elsewhere in this issue is reported the decision of the Australian Supreme Court regarding the legality of the action of the Coroner in holding an inquest in connection with tho “tattooed arm mystery,” mid it is inteicsting to nolo that while in Ausralia it is held illegal to conduct an inquest without tho Coroner first viewing the body of the deceased, provision is made in Now Zealand for an inquest to be held even though the body cannot be produced. The Coroners Act in force in New Zealand directs that where a Coroner has reason to believe that a death has occurred in such circumstances that an inquest ought to be bold, he may, with the consent of the Attorney-General, conduct an inquest though no body be produced.
