WINTER MEETING Arctic Star’s Hack Hurdles Tho Napier Park Racing Club's winter meeting opened at Greenmeadows to-day Hi wintry weather. The grounds were m good order, and the going was easy. Ifiere was a fair attendance of tho public, who were treated to some iutercHiug racing.

Very satisfactory fields competed in tho various events. Both the hack hurdles and the steeplechase attracted a good number of starters and tho jumping was of a high standard. The Handicapping was carried out by Air 11. Ooyle and Air W. P. Russell was in the judge’s box. Dispatches to the fields were given by Mr A, Vincent. J ho arrangements lor the day were capably carried out by the secretary, Air J. E. Gleadow, and his officials. A musical* programme supplied by Messrs C. B. Hansen and Co., Ltd., through loud-®peakers was appreciated by the public. Ono machine paying two dividends was in operation on the tutalisator. AIOTEO HACK HURDLES. Of £7O; 1} mile. 3 ARCTIC STAR, Air W. J. Woods’s b. g., 4yrs., by Diacquenod—Suowlands, 9.1 (Ridgway) 1 1 Gold Cure, Air It. J. Ale Donald s blk. g., aged, 9.13 (McDonald) 2 4 Hunting Jay, Air U. Hart’s b. g., syrs., 10.0 (AlcDowell) ... 3 Also started: C Hunting Lass, 5 Kaola, 9 Sabatini, 7 Jazz King, 2 Treasure Hunt, 10 Pae Tutu, 8 Kimbo. Hunting Jay was lirtt to show out from Gold Cure, Kimbo, and Arctic Star. Over the first hurdle Hunting Jay led from Hunting Lass, Sabatini, Treasure Hunt, Gold Cure and Kimbo, but passing the stand the order was Hunting Jay, Hunting Lass, Gold Cure, Sabatini, Kqnbo and Kaola, with Pae Tutu last. Going down the back Hunting Jay still led from Sabatini, Treasure Hunt, Kimbo and Gold Cure, but at the fence bv tho six furlongs Treasure Hunt and Kimbo fell, leaving Gold Cure in front from Hunting Jay, Arctic Star and Kaola. Turning for homo Gold Cure held a good lead to look a winner, but over the last fence Hunting Jay and Arctic Star nut in strong claims and soon joined Gold Cure. At this stage it appeared ns if Hunting Jay met with interference. In a stirring battle Arctic Star held on best to win by a neck over Gold Cure, with Hunting Jay half a length back and Kaola fourth, followed by Sabatini and Jazz King. Time, 2-47 4-5. maiden scurry. Of £55; 5 furlongs. 1 CAEN, Air W. Henderson’s br. f., 3yrs., by Arausio—Hoy, 8.7 (Marsh) 1 2 Sybil Song, Air F. S. Hellyer’s br. m., 4yrs., 8.7 (Broughton) 2 4 Drumpeel, Mr J. Berrigan’s b. g., syrs., 8.7 (Atkins) 3 Also started: 4 AVar Parade 8.7, 2 Gay Gift 8.7, 6 Okanagan 8.7, 8 Alahora Grand 8.7, 7 Granvale 8.7. Drumpeel got tho best of the start to be followed by Caen, Okanagan and Gay Gift, who drew wide out. Three furlongs from home Drumpeel led from Caen, Gay Gift, Okanagan and Sybil Song. This was the order entering the straight, when Gay Gift ran very wide. In the run homo Caen stuck on best to win by three lengths from Sybil Song who came well over the last two furlongs to be three lengths ahead of Drumpeel who weakened. Granvale was fourth, followed by Okanagan and Mahora Grand. Time, 1.4 2-5. AIEEANEE HACK HANDICAP. Of £7O; 6 furlongs. 1 SUNNY MAID, Mr C. J. Also started: 5 Peggy Defoe 8.1, 6 Thane 8.0, 4 Fortene 8.0. Sunny Maid was first out, closely followed by Contact and Hunting Cat, with Fortene last. At the threefurlong post the order was Sunny Alaid, Contact, Hunting Cat, Peggy Defoe and Thane, with Fortene next. This order was maintained into the straight, when Sunny Alaid was the best part of four lengths ahead of Contact, with tbe order behind unchanged. Sunny Alaid went on to win as she liked by four lengths, but over the last half-furlong Hunting Cat came on to outstay Contact and get second money by a length, wiili Thane fourth, followed by Peggy Defoe and Fortune. From an even start The Drone was asked to tafco tho lead over the first fence, followed by Taura Lad, Dozie, Victor Colima, .Petrarch, Royal Songster,. Anemometer and Kahunoke. Passing the stands 01 er tho brush double Tho Drouo led from Taura Lad Victor Colima, Petrarch, Dozie, Royal Songster, Anemometer and Kahunoke. Going out of the straight to the brush hurdle tho order was unchanged, but here The Drone lost his rider, leaving Taura Lad with a fair lead over Victor Colima, but going to tbe post and rad Dozio ran up momentarily second to Taura l.ad, Petrarch ami Royal Songster. Into tho straight the second time the order was Taura Lad. Petrarch, Dozie, Ryval Songster and Kahunoke, with Anemometer last.
