CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Meeting in Hastings YEAR’S USEFUL WORK The annual meeting and the monthly meeting of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce was held last evening, and was presided over by Mr J. S. McLeod, president. The annual report as already published, together with the balance-sheet, was adopted. ■ Mr A. J. C. Runciman expressed the view that the Chamber could well interest itself in local affairs to a greater extent, and thus create a greater public interest in the Chamber’s activities.

Mr McLeod remarked that the Karamu Settlement Scheme had been put through almost entirely by the Chamber, which had dealt also with the East Coast Railway, earthquake building regulations, itinerant trading, one-day shops, local taxi fares, mail hours, and other important local affairs.

Mi- McLeod expressed his appreciation of the services of the executive, and of the keenness, ability, and loyalty of the secretary, Mi- F. Perrin. A resolution expressing appreciation of the services of Dlr W. C. Whitlock, and regret at his departure from' the district, was passed by the meeting on the motion of the president, and the meeting also placed on record its appreciation of the services of Mr Baird as vice-president and of Mr H. J. W. Hallett as a member of the council of the Chamber. Mr Cecil Duff remarked that the annual report showed that the Chamber had accomplished a good deal of useful work during the year. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr J. S. McLeod; vicepresident, .Mr W. E. Bate; council, Messrs Joseph Wilson, W. H. Wood, and H. G. Harvey; chairman of committees, industries and commerce, Mr A. C. Runciman; transport, Mr A. F. Redgrave; town improvements, Mr Lester Roberts; scenery preservation, Mr F. E. Smith; Parliamentary Bills, Mr A. S. Tonkin; vocational, Mr V. A. Thomson; publicity and functions, Mr K. H. Bayliss; taxation and Government economy, Mr A. C. A. Hyde; membership, Mr Noel Wilson; public affairs, D-. E. Y. Conine.
