SPEED LIMIT WINS

Holiday Traffic in London A survey of the Easter traffic conditions in London appears to have established two things—that the speed limit in built-up areas produced a more or less even flow of traffic through all districts, in spite of an enormous increase in the number of cars and bicycles; and there there was a definite reduction in the number of accidents compared with last Easter. It was reported that the local authorities were, on the whole, well satisfied with the working of the speed limit, and that the Minister for Transport, Mr Hore-Belisha, who kept in close touch with the Ministry officials from his holiday retreat at Angmering-on-Sea, Sussex, was also satisfied. An official at the Ministry of Transport stated: “The speed limit is becoming wore and more popular, and there is a much better spirit on the roads. One advantage of the limit is that it cuts out overtaking where overtaking is not safe—a cause of many accidents. The limit regulates a steady flow of traffic through towns.” Enquiries show that what congestion there was was caused largely by 'overcautious motorists ■who travelled well inside tho limit, but too fast to allow others to overtake, thus creating a procession. Motorists complained of an increased number of pedal cyclists, who, they declared, rode “all over tho road.” and an A.A. superintendent reported that on one of thp main south coast roads there was a convoy of 75 motor-coaches behind one another.
