RUGBY BATTLE

Jockeys at Play in Hastings HEAVY 8-STONE FORWARDS The annual Rugby match between the visiting and local jockeys took place yesterday before a crowd of nearly 500 interested onlookers at the Hastings racecourse. The game was very evenly contested. The local lads relied on their heavy set of forwards, who averaged over eight stone, while the visitors made use .of their fact hack division, which included the flying Scotchman, McDonald of Otahuhu, who has been playing alongside Brown in club Rugby. Brown has made a name for himself in the All Black trials. After seeing McDonald in action, many people wondered how he missed selection.

Jackie Green opened the scoring for the visitors when ho sent the ball over the bar from a penalty. Later he scored a brilliant try and converted it, giving his team a lead of eight points. “Bruiser” Fanning forced his way over for a well-earned try for the locals, but King missed the kick. Near the close of the game Fanning again outpaced the opposition to score under the posts, and this time King added the pointe with u magnificent kick from ten yards out. With the scores even, both sides struggled for supremacy, the referee taking a hand at times to keep the visitors out. No further score resulted, and the game was declared a dead heat.

His Worship the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Maddison, refereed. At half-time a collection was taken up for the Hastings Free Kindergarten. The amount will be announced when all the boxes are counted. Both teams were entertained at afternoon tea by courtesy of Mr. 0. Nelson. Mr. Maddison thanked the teams for their effort on behalf of such a worthy cause, and said he had never witnessed a better sporting game. Cheers were given for His Worship and for Mr. Watson, who organised the game. Thanks was expressed to the Celtic Club lor the use of jerseys and gear,, and to the Bayites Club, and Mr Jones, of the High Shool staff, for the loan of goal posts, also to Mr. Graham McCormick, who donated the programmes.
