H.B.J.C. FIRST DAY

The Concluding Results QUEEN’S PRIDE & CAWBEEN Jockey Taken to Hospital Some interesting racing was provided in the concluding events at the openin gday of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s meeting at Hastings yesterday. P. Burgess, the rider of Victor Colima, who fell in the Steeples, was removed to hospital. The totalisator handled £4187 for the day, as against £4617 for the same day last year, a decrease of £430. The concluding results were:— KIDNAPPERS HANDICAP. Of £7O; 6 furlongs. 3/1 QUEEN’S PRIDE, Mrs C. Haldane’s ch. f. 3 yrs., by Leighton —Lady Fera 8.7 (B. H. Morris) 1 7/6 Alby, Mr A. T. Smith’s ch. g. 4yrs. 9.7 (R- Marsh) 2 5/5 Contact, Mr K. Gillies’ br. g, 4 yrs. 9.7 (H. Young) 3 (Winner trained by 11. Griffiths, Hastings.)

Also started: 2/4 Maine 9.9 (W. Broughton), 4/2 Silver Song 8.7 (JLeach), 6/7 Fortene 8.6 (H. Goldfinch), 1/2 Collision 8.3 (P. Atkins), 8/8 Joystick 8.0 (S. Anderson). From an excellent start Alby was first to show out, but just ahead of Silver Song, Queen’s Pride, Contact, and Joystick. Half a mile from home Alby was still in front of Silver Song, Contact, Queen’s Pride, Joystick and Collision, with Maine last. Silver Song, Contact and Alby were practically abreast entering the straight, with Queen’s Pride just in behind. In a struggle for supremacy over the last furlong and a-half, Queen’s Pride stayed on best to win by a length from Alby, with Contact two lengths back third, and only a nose in front of Joystick. Then came Maine, Collision and Silver Song, who stopped badly over the last furlong, Time, 1.17.

HERETAUNGA HANDICAP. Of £80; 6J furlongs. 2/1 CAWBEEN, Mr W. 11. Corlett’s br. m. 5 yrs. by Hunting Song—Wallaby 8.3 (11. Goldfinch) 1 4/4 Slippery, Mr G. McCormick’s blk. g. 5 yrs. 9.2 (H. Young) 2 6/6 Royal Bengal, Mr C. H. Slater’s b. g. aged (J. Sheehan) 3 (Winner trained by owner, Hastings).

Also started: 1/3 Curie 9.9 (G. Wilton), 5/5 Speed 9.2 (B. H. Morris), 3/2 Coronilla 8.10 (R. Marsh), 7/7 False Scent 8.1 J (J. Leach). Slippery was first to break the line, being closely followed by Cawbeen and Coronilla. When the field took up their running positions in the next furlong Cawbeen and Coronilla were slightly ahead of Speed and Royal Bengal, and it was at this stage that Slippery was squeezed back to last. Half a mile from home tho running positions were still the same, and turning for home Cawbeen and Coronilla were slightly ahead of Royal Bengal, who was just ahead of False Scent. In a good race to the winning post Cawbeen finished on best to win by two lengths from Slippery, who came from the rear. Royal Bengal was a length away third, and Speed fourth. Coronilla was fifth. Time, 1.24.

PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW

Review of the Fields (By “The Barb.”) The acceptances received for tomorrow’s race® are very fair considering that quite a few met with mishaps yesterday while contesting their respective races. With a lew showers on the course, which was slightly cut up yesterday, it is anticipated that the going will he slower than on the opening day. Racing again commences at noon. 12.0-HASTINGS HANDICAP Of £7O; 5J furlongs.

Sunny Maid was not started yesterday and on her recent track work this mare is sure to attract no little attention. Royal Feast is another that was kept in his box yesterday. His recent work has impressed quite a few. Abbey Feale is sure to be in demand, as up to this distance the little ’un can leg it with the best of hack company. Peggy Defoe won the Maiden well, but in a class that did not measure up to the grade of those engaged to-morrow. Silver Song was one of the first day’s biggest disappointments on account of her recent attractive track work. Lady Cheval is good in heavy going, so may cause concern to come of the entrants. Okanagan on Thursday’s showing is not much class, as she had every chance but failed to weigh in. Puru is a fine cut of a three-year-old, but after being left in the Maiden he was unable to show his wares. The shortest prices on the indicator may be shown by Sunny Maid, Abbey Feale and Royal Feast, 12.40—WHA KATU 11 CRDI.ES HANDICAP Of £7O; 1-J miles.

Eleven have paid up out of twentytwo nominators. Esteem ran a fine race yesterday until punishment was applied, but over two furlongs less may do better. Million, considering she was having her first race for some time, caught the eye as a most likely improver. Padishah will be having his first public appearance between the flags. Gold Cure was second at Levin in a hack hurdle event and yesterday won the Corinthian. Plate in impressive style, so that now, with only Sihs.

above the minimum, will not lack for solid support. Anemometer appears unable to go the first bit, but she can stay on all right. Yesterday she was flying at the end of the mile and threequarters, but to-morrow, with the distance reduced to a mile and a-half, her chances at the first glairne do not appear so bright, but she should have benefited by yesterday’s race. Journet is not very forward and cannot be recommended on the score of condition. Kaola is a good fencer and the shorter distance may favour the visitor from Taranaki. Tahoma does not impress the writer as a hurdler. Sabatini is an “iffer,” while Arctic Star only went so-so yesterday. Count Willonyx is on the improve, but it is very doubtful if he has come on sufficiently to entice confidence. Three that may dispute favouritism are Gold Cure, Esteem and Anemometer, I.2O—HAVELOCK HANDICAP Of £7O: 6J furlongs.

Gold Mission galloped well here on Wednesday morning, but being on the small iside may not be up to 9.11 under the conditions. Alby went a fair race in the six on Thursday for second, so must be a big consideration. Passion Flower is galloping well of late. Royal Feast may prefer the opening eventFortene was never prominent the first day. The Grasper appeals, but Shenanikida does not. Joy Stick was a close fourth yesterday, so is a lightweight possibility. Trackman is on the improve, but needs another race. What will carry more money than Alby, Passion Flower and Joy Stick? 2.O—HAWKE’S BAY STEEPLECHASE Of £120; about 2J miles.

Cotsfield found two and a-quarter miles yesterday a little beyond hie staying powers, so now, over the extra quarter mile, has a stiff job ahead, more especially as he is not a good second day horse. Spalpiko in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles was trailing the field for most of the journey, but over the lajst three furlongs made a comfortable forward move and, being more at home over country, the aged Spalpeen gelding is one that might go well. Taura Lad was tiring over the shorter course yesterday. Dozie, for a novice, gave a fine display in the June Steeples, making only one slight error. That race will do her no harm, so that she will be expected to go very close in making it a double win. Victor Colima tipped out at the second fence, so gave no guide. Hukemanu hurt himself on Tuesday morning and will hardly be at his best. Heliotype is another that is under a cloud. The race yesterday should have improved Petrarch and he was seen going on with the business at the end of the two and a-quarter miles. Three that may be entrusted with most support are Spalpiko, Dozie and Petrarch. 2.40-RAUKAWA HANDICAP Of £80; 1 mile.

Boudoir won well yesterday in a false run race and now with lib. less than lOst. has a man’s job ahead of her. Alby, if started here., will be one to find ready support, as'a mile suits him admirably. Royal Banquet won will at Levin. Maine has not been asked to go further than seven furlongs, but there is no reason why a mile should not suit her. Werohia was not handled in a very capable manner when beaten into third place yesterday. Queen’s Pride will again be one of the tough ones. Tres Sec may surprise. Rady Wessex and Bothwell are outside possibilities. This may prove the hardest race of the day witn the betting order perhaps Royal Banquet, Queen's Pride and Tres Eec. 3.20-WOO DLANDS HAN DICAP Of £7O; 6 furlongs.

Contact was third, but well back, yesterday to Queen’s Pride and Alby. He is not at home at all under the present state of the tracks. Windward is a good horse in winter time, but he may be in need of a race. Nevertheless, it is only a slight risk. Hunting Cat was easily beaten the other morning by Collision, and as Collision failed to show up yesterday it does not appear too bright for Hunting Cat. Silver Song is in again, as also is The Grasper. Only a small field and what is invested may see the most of it on Windward, The Grasper and Contact. 4.O—FINAL HANDICAP Of £80; 6 furlongs.

This event concludes the meeting and the public will have only a quintette to select from. Slippery ran a fine race yesterday and did not get the best of passages. Cawbeen was always there and, being a Hunting Song that revels in winter going, she will again be one of the favourites. Coronilla ran a very disappointing race in the Heretaunga Handicap, but she mayrepeat her Wanganui performance tomorrow. Royal Bengal ran a lino race yesterday. False Scent is not fancied. The three most fancied will most likely be Royal Bengal, Slippery and cawbeen.
