NEW JAPANESE DEMANDS
Troops Move to Great Wall EVENTS REGARDED GRAVELY (By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright.) (Received 14, llflfllO a.m.) SHANGHAI, June 13. Following stringent demands by the Japanese general, Ho YingChin, chairman of the Peking Military Council, left hurriedly for Nanking to consult the Central Government. Meanwhile it is reported that 12 Japanese troop trains and one armoured train have come southward to the Great Wall through Shanghaikwn. Japanese troops have also appeared at Minyum, 40 miles to the northward of Peking. It is feared that events may take a serious turn at any moment. The Japanese notified local Chinese authorities that a squadron of Japanese aeroplanes would fly from Jehol to Peking to-day in ordqr to inspect the evacuation of Chinese troops. An earlier message stated that fresh demands were presented to the Peking Military Council by the Japanese military authorities to-day calling for the wholesale dismissal of Chinese officials in Hopei Province and their replacement by others friendly to the Japanese. These developments are causing much uneasiness among Chinese officials, many of whom have begun to send their families southward. BRITAIN VIGILANT Japanese Plans Obscure (Received 14, 9.0 a.m.) LONDON, June 2. The British Government is closely watching Japanese activities in China. Although the Japanese have demanded the removal of certain Chinese troops, they have not asked for the vacated areas to be constituted domilitarised zones. The Japanese militarists’ intentions are at present obscure. Tho “News-Chronicle’s” Tokio correspondent says the newspapers now refer to North China as a buffer area between Manchukuo and China, in which only a pro-Japanese Government can be tolerated.
