Cup for Poultry.
Mr J. H. Macniven, president of the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society, who is desirous of seeing the forthcoming Royal Show an event worthy of the name, has been promised the donation of a silver cup for competition in the poultry section of the show. Unprofitable Farming Investment. An illustration of how certain farming land may not prove to be a profitable investment even over a period of years was provided in the Supreme Court at Auckland during the hearing of a civil claim and counter-claim. In the course of his evidence plaintiff mentioned that during the past eight to ten years he had been acting with power of attorney for an overseas investor. “In 1911 he put £30,000 into a property of 8000 acres in the Raglan district,” said plaintiff, “and he has never had a shilling of interest or principal out of it.” Minister's Prize Lambs,
As a practical farmer the Hon. A. Hamilton, Acting-Minister of Finance and Postmaster-General, has gained the distinction of winning the first award for fat lambs in the South Island lamb competition at Smithfield, London. Nine districts competed. The winning lambs were raised on Mr. Hamilton’s farm at Thornbury, Southland. Southland won the shield, and the judges, commenting on Mr. Hamilton’s exhibit, said: “A pen of good strain Down lambs of exceptional merit, short in the leg, lean across the loins and perfect in shoulders. Represent an ideal lamb for the London trade from every point- of view.”
