CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Waipukurau Body Meets UNIVERSAL HALF-HOLIDAY From Our Own Correspondent. WAIPUKURAU, June 13. A meeting of the Waipukurau Chamber of Commerce was held this evening, Mr T. G. Given presiding. The chairman, who had been asked to report on the subject of a suitable aeroplane landing ground, stated that since the Chamber had appointed him to do this an aero club had been formed in Waipukurau, therefore the Chamber resolved that this body could handle the matter. Correspondence was received from the Napier Retailers’ Association in advocacy of a universal half-holiday and asking the chamber's views on this subject. The consensus of opinion of the meeting was in favour of a national half-day eo as to do away with the recurring polls on this subject. However, the chamber considered that the matter should be deferred to the next general meeting. The chairman and. Mr A. C. Holms were appointed by the chamber to attend a meeting to-morrow afternoon (Friday) of representatives of local bodies in connection with the official opening of the new traffic bridge at Waipukurau. The Associated Chambers of Commerce wrote advising that the executive was prepared to re-admit the chamber at the reduced affiliation rate of 1/3 per member for the balance of the financial year. Mr J. H. Walker was not in favour of the chamber affiliating, on the grounds of expense and the levies it might be called upon to bear as its portion of the cost of the forthcoming Empire Conference at Wellington next year. He was also doubtful whether the chamber received value for its money from the parent body, or if the Chamber could bear the expense. Mr Holms pointed out that the Associated Chamber, working in the interests of its affiliated chambers, had accomplished matters from which all had benefitted, but at the same time the chamber had to bear in mind the question of expense and whether its finances would permit affiliation. This subject was eventually deferred to the next general meeting for further consideration. The New Zealand Defence Department wrote expressing thanks for the chamber’s efforts in securing permission from property-owners for liveshell practice to be carried out on their holdings by the various artillery units when in camp at Waipukurau. Mr 11. Roach said that unless the chamber was in the future able to secure the permission required by the Defence authorities from the propertiowners, Waipukurau would probably lose the artillery camps A motion was carried that Messrs. F. A. G. Dunn and J. H. Walker be appointed to interview preperty-owners on this question and also thanking them for their past efforts in this connection. A rider was also added thanking the property-owners for generously placing their holdings at the military authorities convenience.
