TENNIS IN FRANCE
Australians Playing Well (Received 30, 11.15 a.m.) PARIS, May 29. The French tennis championships were continued on heavy, damp courts. The conditions did not suit the Australians, but all showed excellent form. McGrath gave his best display of the tour. Crawford was never extended out of his leisurely rhythm. Menzel proved too strong for Quist on a court which was not to the Australian’s liking. Menzel attacked furiously and both players gave delightful exhibitions. Hopman put up a noteworthy performance in vanquishing the South African Farquharson in straight sets. It was a battle of volleyers. Hopman was invariably the quicker. Results: Men's singles.—Third round: Crawford defeated Pallada, 6—l, 6 —3, 6—4; Hopman defeated Farquharson, 6—2, 6 —3, 6—l; Merlin defeated Malacek, 6—2, 4—6, 4—6, 6—l, 6—2; Caska defeated Henkel, 3—6, 6—3, 6—2; Bernard defeated Hines, 3—6, B—6, 6—3, 6 —4; Stefani defeated Feret, 2—6, 6—4, 6—2, 7—5.
Fourth round: Menzel defeated Quist, 6 —4, 2—6, 6—o, 6—2; Cramm defeated Hecht, 6—3, 7—5, 6 —2.
