SCOTS’ SOCIETY

Monthly Hastings Ingleside ENJOYABLE EVENING It was to a well-filled house that Chief H. W, C. Baird expressed his pleasure iu welcoming the members and their friends to the last monthly ingleside of the Hastings and District Scots’ Society held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Market street. Regret was expressed at the absence tiiroiigh illness of Councillor Guthrie. Intimation that the next reel class would fake the form of a late night was made, and the hearty support of the members ana their friends is desired.

The programme, which was an interesting and varied one, had many novel items. The opening selection on the pipes by members of the Hawke’s Bay Pipe Band sent a skirl through the air that touched the hearts of many in the audience. Another novel feature was a short Scottish play, depicting the typical English gentleman who has leased a shooting lodge away up in the Highlands of Scotland. Although a rather bad shot, in fact no shot at all, he is anxious to get On to the moors with his gun. The wily old gamekeeper gets in the way of a blank cartridge, and is compensated to the extent of £5O, much to his surprise and delight. He cutely inquires of the Englishman if he will be going out with the guns again. The characters were ably acted by Messrs. Frank Walker, Geo. Warden, Gordon Spurdle, Mervyn Richard, and Misses Laurel Curry and Doris Bott.

The entertainment by Mr. E. Culver and Mr. Le Comte was both interesting and mystifying; how these two artists ‘‘put it across” the “canny” Se&ts provoked prolonged laughter. The songs by Mrs. Poppelwell, Miss Doris Price, Mr. Garf Naylor, Mr. H. File and Mr. McQuire were greatly enjoyed, and a’.! had to respond to encores. The following artists contributed to the dancing:—Highland Fling, Misses June Farquhaison, Heather Baird, Melva Brown, Jean McKay, Bessie Ellis, Joyce Farquharson and Master lan Farquharson; double swords, Miss June Farquharson and Master Farquharson; Highland reel. Misses .Tune Farquharson. Jean McKay. Heather Baird, and Melva Brown; Sean Triubhas, Miss Jean Lowry. The dancers were the pupils of Miss Jean Lowry. After a hearty supper, the company danced till “Auld Lang Syne” brought a happy gathering to a close. Messrs. Lord and Warren were the musicians and Councillor Ramsay the M.C.
