RIOT AT ST. JOHNS

ST. JOHNS (Newfoundland) May 11. A rioting crowd smashed store w'n dows and stole merchandise to-nigni after the police and unemployed had engaged during the afternoon in a hand-to-hand battle in front of the Colonial buildings.

The breaking of the windows of jewellery and shoe stores in tho West End followed the assembling of a crowd of 900 demanding an interview with the Commissioner, Sir John Hope Simpson.

In a police l charge breaking the gathering, John Meaney, Press correspondent, an unemployed spokesman and several police were injured. The march on the Colonial building started after a mass meeting had been told that tho Commission Government refused to discuss unemployment with the committee of unemployed. The crowd marched through the main streets behind the Union Jack. Three arrests were made.
