LIQUOR AFTER HOURS
Licensee and Barman Fined
A police visit to the Empire Hotel on Sunday, April 14 last, resulted in charges being laid in the Napier Magistrate’s Court this morning against the licensee, Douglas Sinclair, and a barman, Harold Moores. Sinclair was fined £1 and costs 10/- for allowing liquor to be sold on his premises after hours, and -Moores was fined £3 with costs 10/for supplying liquor after hours. Mr. J. Miller, S. M., occupied the bench, and Mr. S. H. Morrison represented Sinclair and Moores, both of whom pleaded guilty. On Sunday, April 14, at 3.30 p.m. said Senior-Sergeant W. PendeY, he accompanied Constable J. Greenlees to the Empire Hotel, when they found two men drinking in the bar. Mr. Sinclair, the licensee, was in bed at the time
“This is the first time that Moores lias committed a breach of the licensing Act,’’ he added. “The conduct of the Empire Hotel has been good up till this breach.’’
The magistrate said that lie would take the hotel’s good conduct into consideration in imposing a penalty against Sinclair.
Arising out of that same police visit to the Empire Hotel, charges of being unlawfully on licensed premises were brought against Kenneth McDonald, of Pakipaki, and Albert Walker, of Hastings. Both were convicted and fined £l-10-0, with costs 10/-.
