VILLAGERS SHOW FIGHT
Hastings OK’s Goal Kicking Successes Havelock were by no means disgraced when they suffered defeat at the hands of Hastings H. 5.0.8. by
10 points to nil. Old Boys, who scored all their points in the first spell, were unable to cross the villagers’ Ime throughout the game, the second spell of which was scoreless. The teams were as lollowHastings H. 5.0.8.: Vartan, Rainbow, Jonson, Lowe, Apsey, Holt Hardie, Collinge, Agnew, Palmer, Wardrop, Flowers, Irwin. Lissette, McCarthy. Havelock North: James, W. Whitehead, Gloyn, Graham, Inglis, Roy Joll, Meads, Caghlan, Ross, Small, R. Whitehead, Russell, J ago, Ferguson, Smith. The villagers opened by taking play to Old Boys’ corner, and from a throwin Vartan ran through the whole of the opposing side with the leather at his feet. Short kicking over James’s head the pair raced for the goal line, with James kicking over the side line pist in time to prevent the Old Boys’ full-back from securing a try. His effort drew a round ol applause from the stand. A penalty followed the throw-out, from which McCarthy opened the scoring account. 3—o. Stung by this reverse Havelock pushed strongly, but their handling of the ball was faulty. With the ball safely tucked under his arm Vartan set off on another excursion to the villagers’ line when he was neatly grounded by two opponents who gave a good display of a low tackle. McCarthy promptly turned the tables on a promising passing movement by the Villagers to gain half the length of the field. An infringement in a scrum near the villagers’ line gave .McCarthy a chance to raise the flags. 6 —o. After breaking up 'i hot assault by the villagers Old Boys opened out and Loire, gaining possession, raced away without a man to pass to, but Coghlan overhauled him from behind in time to save trouble. Jhe ball again in play went to Apsey, who kicked a splendid field goal. 10— 0. A moment later Vartan tools a similar shot lor a ball to sail just outside the upright. Play for the spell ended shortly aiterwards in midfield. When play resumed Havelock withstood a gruelling ordeal but after the siege was lilted they were again pushed back, when Hardie opened up to Jus backs. Despite the onslaughts the villagers defence held intact to enable them once more to participate in midfield play. After sorting themselves out when piled in a heap Old Boys again swept into the attack, when they found themselves' bottled up. A determined rally by the Havelock forwards transferred play to the other end ot the field. In the closing stages they had the ascendancy of the play but were unable to open their scoring account. The final score was 10—0 in favour of Old Boys. Mr A. Kirkpatrick refereed.
