The prosecution alleged that the Duke obtained sums of 2400 and £2s') by pawning jewellery auu falsely representing that it belonged to him. The jewellery was heirlooms ’eft by his mother on trust, by which it could be lent to tho Duke’s first and second wives.
Sir Henry Curtis-Bennett, for the defence, declared that Thomas Sutton’s executors initiated the prosecution two j cars alter the pawning. The Duke of Manchester gave evidence emphatically denying intention io defraud. He declared that he prepared now to redeem the jewels and pay the interest. He bowed to the Judge when sentenced, betraying «• emotion.
Warders took the Duke of Manchester in a taxi cab to the Wormwood Scrubs prison, where the usual routine was observed. His belongings were noted and wrapped in a parcel. Ho underwent a medical examination and had a bath. Afterwa. ,s he was handed a mug, a prayer book and a Bible, and was locked in a cell.
The Duke of Manchester vu« .-rested on March 18 and chnlgcl with having obtained 2650 by false pretences if 1933 from Thomas button, a wealthy London pawnbroker and jeweller, and ■iis manager, Waller Lawlor, both of whom are now deceased. The Duke was remanded on bad.
