WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
Meeting at Elsthorpe An enjoyable evening was spent when members of the Elsthorpe Women’s Institute entertained the men at their fifth annual celebration. The president, Mrs C. N. Williams, on behalf of the Institute, welcomed the men and other visitors, and congratulated the members on the increase of membership from 37 to 80 in the past five years. Proceedings were opened by the singing of the Institute Ode, followed by vocal numbers rendered by Mrs Tiffen and Miss H. Stephenson, which were well received. A pianoforte solo was played by Miss S. Williams, and was also highly appreciated. Miss Pat and Mr Tim Williams staged a delightful play’, which caused much laughter. After community singing Misses B. Ryan, M. Sullivan, J. Sutherland, B. Priest, and Mesdames M. Ryan, I. Priest, E. Gilmour, G. Beachen, presented a play, written by Mrs Bibby, Waipawa. A very delicious savoury supper was enjoyed by all, and the birthday cake, which was made by Mrs Watson, sen., was cut by Mr Ryan. The winners of the competitions were Miss B. Macaulay and Messrs Reg Brightwell and Thorpe. After Mr Ryan had thanked the women for their delightful entertainment, the young people enjoyed themselves by having a dance. The music was supplied by Mrs H. Cheer, Misses L. Nelson and H. Stephenson. The happy evening was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem. — Takapau Meeting The sixth anniversary birthday of the lakapau Women’s Institute was held in the Takapau Public Hall on Ihursday afternoon, when there was a large attendance of local members and of many visitors from surrounding sister institutes. .Mrs W. B. White, president, was in the chair, Mrs Phil May was W’oposed and elected aa a new xacmbt?.
A short programme of entertainment items was much appreciated as follows: —Miss Ethel White, sailors’ hornpipe; Miss Freda Vesty, recitation. Mrs Kilford presented the prizes for the year as follows:—Points prize for the year’s competitions, Mrs W. B. White; runner-up, Miss Audrey Thomsen. Prizes for trading competition, Mrs W. Jackson 1, Mrs W. B. White 2, Mrs B. Blair 3. A cleverly acted and well-staged playette, “Aunt Belinda’s Burglar”, was given by Misses Doris Craig, Freda Vesty, Flora McMillan and Mrs Arthur Jackson A bounteous afternoon tea was served in the supper room, the tables being beautifully decorated in the Institute colours, orange and yellow. The chief feature of the tea ww a beautiful birthday cake made by Mrs W. G. Jackson anu feed oy ..Its Askew, to both of whom votes of thanks were tendered by the president. The entertainment programme was continued after tea, Miss Ethel White, dancing the Highland fling and Miss Freda Vesty contributing a recitation. The competition was a guessing one of shrubs and flowers and was won by Miss Ina Halford. It was decided to have an open evening on June 7, when the men will provide the programme. Donors of the prizes presented were:—Points prize for year, Mrs W. Little; first trading prize, Mrs Bjorngaard; second trading prize, Mrs W. Jackson; third trading prize, Mrs W. Jackson.
