RULES FOR DRAMATISTS
A modern playwright’s life is not a happy one. How much less,so was the lot of an ancient Sanscrit dramatist who had to bear, in addition to the carping of critics, the weight of strict rules of writing laid down in advance Here are some of them:— The hero shall appear in every act. He may be a Brahmin, minister m merchant. The heroine may be a lady of good family or a cortesan. Or the two mu> share the honours, provided they do not meet. It is advisable that the drama be full of rascals. The erotic sentiment should dominate. The ending must be happy; tragedy is forbidden. —Golden Book Magazine.
