MANY NEW FEATURES

Body and Engine Development The outstanding feature of the new Vauxhall light six is undoubtedly independent front wheel springing, better known by the short title of kneeaction. A complete new set of “stresses’’ had to be understood and overcome, and the chassis frame of the new car is an imposing piece of work. It is “cross braced,’’ which means that there are X-shaped members running diagonally across it. And that gives very great rigidity, with lightness. With a more rigid chassis frame there is less strain on the body, and Consequently loss tendency for body-rattles to develop. Body rupners have disappeared from the new light six. An entirely new method has been employed, by which the body is carried on strong supports on the side of the actual chassis frame. This means a saving of several inches in height. The new car is so low that two men of ordinary height can shako hands over the top without standing on tip-toe, and yet there is even more head-room inside the car.

In addition to a redesigned cylinderhead, a new vacuum ignition control and other new features, there are a number of detail improvements to the engine. The entire engine “floats” in rubber. There is no solid metal-to-nietal contact between engine and frame. And the supports in which the engine is cradle,d are, as it were, “straddled” across tho chassis frame. This means the practical elimination .of vibration.
