HAWKE’S BAY HUNT

Meet at Mr. Duncan Holden’s

A VERY COLD DAY

(Contributed)

The Hunt met at Mr Duncan Holden’s front gate on Thursday, and the field moved off to the valley in front of the homestead, where hounds were cast in the rushes by the creek. They soon found a strong hare that ran uphill, but on top turned right-handed down to the manuka near the river-bed, only to turn across tho flats. Still going fast it gave a good line across the flats and near the forest gate garden ran up hill, following nearly the same line as before and then went oft on top of the main line of hills. It was eventually killed several fields away. Hounds ran an exceptionally fast line and gave the field a chance of seeing them at their best, as, despite the cold wind, they hold the scent without a cheek. After a longish breather for riders and horses, the Master took hounds back to the creek bed, where they found again and got a good run across the flats towards the rape crop. Here hounds followed uphill, only to lose at tho summit. Later, when drawing the flats again, hounds, in full cry, over-ran forbidden country and had to be whipped off by Mr White and Mr Donnelly, after which the Master took the pack in. Mr and Mrs Holden’s hospitality was more than appreciated by the followeis and onlookers, coming as it did at the finish of a good but very cold day.
