RELIEF WORKERS

The Hastings Association At a general meeting of the Hastings New Relief Workers’ Association held on Thursday night a large attendance of members was present. A letter from the National 1 nion in Wellington wns received pointing out that the Unemployment Board, through Mr Bromley, had gone back on its agreement with the men who were forced into camps in the South Island regarding paying the men's wives and families 30/- a week while the men were in camp. An agreement was reached between the National I n’on and the Public Works Department in the South Island about three weeks ago that if the men would go into camp their wives and families would receive 30/- a week, but Mr Bromley had now altered it and had issued a statement that they would only be paid on a pro rata base of the men’s earnings—viz., if the men could only work four days a week their wives only received £l. If there was no work done during the week owing to w*et weather or other causes a wife and family would receive no money whatever. The association decided to forward a strong protest to Mr Bromley through the National Union. The social committee secretary read his report for the past six months, which proved very satisfactory. It was decided to appoint a press committee to place carious questions of the unemployed before the public through the press.
