AFFRAY AT MECCA

ATTACK ON IBN SAND Attempted Assassination DEVOTIONS INTERRUPTED (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received 16, 10.15 a.m.) MECCA, March 15. While King Ibn Saud and the Crown Prince Jir baud were in the course of a pilgrimage, making the fourth of seven customary circumainbulations of the Mosque el Haram, containing the Kaaba black stone, an object of particular veneration for Mohammedans, three members of the Zeid tribe from Yemen, armed with daggers, rushed them in an attempt at assassination. The Crown Prince grappled and threw off the foremost assailant and the royal bodyguard shot him dead, considering the provocation warranted defying the ordinance against bloodshed in holy places. The father and son calmly completed their circumainbulations. They received numerous congratulations and deputations in addition to those customary in connection with the ceremony of Id el Adha, which consists of a sevenfold encirclement of Kaaba as the termination of the devotions.
