SWIMMING

H. CHAMPIONSHIPS Swain Cup to Gisborne TWO MORE RECORDS SET The 1935 Hawke’s Ba?/ provincial swimming championships ended at t!ie Napier baths last night with the recording of new times in five distances. Three new records were created on Monday (880 yards men’s, 150 yards junior boys, 150 yards backstroke men's) and two last night (100 yards intermediate boys’ breaststroke, and the 50 yards Junior girls’), and the large crowd in attendance must have left with the impression that swimming in Hawke's Bay is gradually improving. The Swain memorial cup goes back Io Gisborne, after a race with llerotaunga that bad the spectators about iiig themselves hoarse. To Awn, with an aggregate of 71 championship points, is the first club to win the “Herald” cup, for which clubs affiliated to the Hawke’s Bay Swimming Centro will annually compete. A race which deserves special mention was the 100 yards intermediate boys’ breaststroke, in which B. Snaddon, the winner, made a new time of 1 min. 27 secs. lie and the second boy, T. Cray, fought it out to a finish, and had the crowd wildly excited. Cray’s time was only (wo seconds slower than Snaddon’s. Both show good promise. The new Centro secretary, Mr R. 11. Miles, though new to the organising of championship meetings, had organised the programme with efficiency, towards which the stewards made adequate contributions. Public interest was not confined to the finals. Yesterday afternoon about 100 people gathered at the baths to watch the running of the heats, which brought some good finishes and gave indications of promising swimmers among the younger generation of swimmers. On several occasions these heats were covered in times that were well within the New Zealand standard times, as reference to the under-mentioned results will show. In so far ns the junior and intermediate boys are concerned, many of them gave evidence in their performances that with careful coaching they should develop into swimmers well above tho average. A survey of the 1935 Hawke’s Bay championships shows tho following new times to have been established tor the under-mentioned distances: 880 yaids men. li.
