GLOAMING’S CAREER

Heroic Did Beat Him in 1924 ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT A reader of our sporting columns yesterday bet a thousand pounds to a peanut that Heroic did not beat Gloaming in the Chelmsford Stakes in 1924. The peanut is quite safe, but we •re not so sanguine about collecting the £lOOO. The cabled report of the running of the Chelmsford Stakes on September 13, 1924, is given below. It runs: Gloaming s host of. followers were doomed to disappointment as to seeing him for the second time winner of the Chelmsford Stakes. Hidden by the New Zealander, G. Young, and always holding a good position, he took charge utter entering the straight and at the distance was clear from Ballymena, on which the New Zealander, Con Reed, had the mount, Gloaming’s victory was then loudly proclaimed, but * this proved premature. Ashley Reed brought Heroic along with a rush and beat the old champion comfortably. Ballymena ran well, and was always prominent and was just beaten out of third place. Director finished fifth. Heroic’s time was an Australian record for nine furlongs. Thirteen started, including Ballymena, Bonaparte and Director. The field got away well and from an excellent start Ballymena and Wallace Mortlake took command, Gloaming lying fourth. The positions were practically unaltered until they reached the turn, where Gloaming moved up. Gloaming, Ballymena and Golden Voice entered the straight on terms and two furlongs from home Gloaming was leading Heroic, who came very fast and threw out a challenge and after a short tussle wen i.v a length and a quarter. Wallar. Mortlake l.eati: t Ballymena by a couple of lengths. Time, ).50|. The Sydney Sunday papers' coni tnents on the Chelmsford Stakes practically amount to a declaration that youth must be served. While giving . full credit for his great effort and ad-1

mitting Mason’s contention that he required a bit more tuning up, they point out that Gloaming's age was an undoubted handicap against the brilliant Victorian three-year-old Derby colt. Heroic’s worst fault is fractiousness and difficulty of control, but yesterday, under the skilled guidance of Ashley Reed, he acted most kindly in this respect. The luck was against Gloaming. Details of the result are:—■ CHELMSFORD STAKES. Nine furlongs (w.f.a. with penalties and allowances). Mr. J.. R. Corteen’s HEROIC (Valais —Cheronese), 3yrs., 8.2 inc. 71b. penalty (A. Reed) .... 1 Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s Gloaming (The Welkin—Light),- aged, 9.11, inc. 71b. penalty (G. Young) o Mr. J. Baron’s Wallace Mortlake (Wallace Isinglass—Australian Gas), syrs., 201 b. allowance, 7.12 . 3
