The Right Rev. Bishop Bennett, who has been on a visit to the Chatham Islands, returned to Hawke’s Bay on Monday. Mr J. C. McLauchlan left Waipukuran Inst night for Auckland, whore he will attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Society of Civil En giueers. Mr G. L. Laurenson ,ai> officer of the. Transport Department, Wellington, is paying an official visit to Hawke s Bay with regard to the classification ot main highway* and other matters concerning his department. Mr W. Hart, who bad not attended on account of his illness for some months, was present at the meeting ot the War Relief Association on Monday, ami was welcomed by’ the other members. Mr J. W. McEwen, foreign exchange operator on the M ellington branch of the Bank of New South Wales, has received notice of his promotion to chief clerk of the city division of the bank in Sydney. Mr and Mrs McEwen will leave for Sydney by the \\ anganclla ou March 14. Mr E. E. Porter, of the staff of th< Waipukurau Post Office leaves to-mor-row on tiansler to Port Chambers. Prior to his departure Mr Porter win met by bis fellow members of the pukurau Lodge of the N.Z.1.0.0.F., am made the recipient of a transfer certili cate. Mr A. Jeffs has been appointed electrical traction engineer to the Railwry Department, and in this capacity wil supervise the construction of the electric locomotives to be used on the new Tawa Flat line. Mr Jeffs has been associated prominently with other New Zealand railway electrification project., notably the Otira Tuunel undertaking.
