CROQUET TITLES

H.B. Championships MRS. PITCAITHLY’S SUCCESSES There was a large attendance of players on the United green, Nelson Park, Napier, yesterday to witness the finals of the open singles and the women's singles in the croquet tournament. However, owing to the bad weather during the afternoon only the latter championship was concluded and the former, between Mesdmaes C. Watkins and Piteaithly, ol Hastings, will be played off on the same green to-day. Members of the various clubs served a delicious afternoon tea in the pavilion, the long table having as decoration a central bowl of pink and green hydrangea, the other bowls being of pink miniature dahlias aud phaseolus (snajl creeper). After tea. Mrs H. J. Bailey, tournament manager, addressed those present, saying, “1 wish to thank my tournament committee for assistance given, also all competitors who have helped to make the tourney a success. Play has been keen and the right spirit of sportsmanship has been shown, all losers expressing enjoyment of their game. A word of praise is due to the ladies of the Napier clubs, who took their part in managing luncheons and teas, which was a large job.” She concluded by congratulating the winners and trusting that all competitors had had a good time. She then called ou the president of the Hawke's Bay Association, Mrs C. PHopkins (Hastings) to present the trophies in the following competitions. — Women's singles championship: Mrs Piteaithly, Hustings, (who takes the cup) 1; Mrs Gambrill, Palmerston North, 2. Open doubles Mrs Watkins aud Carrington, both of Hastings, (who also holo a shield each) 1, Mrs Gambrill (Palmerston North) and Mrs Piteaithly, Hastings, 2. Handicap doubles: Mesdames lonkin and Piteaithly (Hastings) 1, Mesdames Claughton and Aikens (Hastings) 2 Handicap singles, A. grade, section 1: Airs Rust (Waipawa) 1, Airs T. Hutchinson 2. Handicap singles, A. grade, section 2: Mrs A. J. Anderson 1, Airs Arisen (Hustings) 2. Handicap singles, B. grade: Mrs Bennett (Hastings), (who also takes the Vigor Brown Cup) 1, Mrs Maugelson 2. Mrs Hopkins next paid a glowing tribute to Airs Bailey’s work as tournament manager and asked her to accept as an appreciation from the H.B. Association a basket of dahlias and a cheque for two guineas. Mrs Hopkins also presented to Mrs Bailey a bouquet of shaded hydrangea on behalf of the combined clubs. Mrs Bailey I suitably .eplied.
