WOOL IN DEMAND
GOOD SALE IN NAPIER Prices on Par With January KEEN COMPETITION Price* for all quality wools remained on a par with the January offering, with some lines being fully firm, at to-day’s sale in Napier. Values for good necks and pieces appear to show a slight advance, but low grade sorts generally eased slightly. Certain scouring types revealed an increase in some instances of up to a halfpenny.
A total offering of approximately 24,200 bales was submitted to a full bench of buyers fully representing overseas consuming countries and NewZealand interests. From the outset a good tone prevailed and some doubt was entertained as to whether certain Jarge purchasing interests would be operating. Within half a minute of the start they showed that they were ‘‘in the market” and continued throughout the morning to outbid the lively opposition for required sorts, which covered a wide range of types. Life was given to the sale by the spirited activity of the Frenchmen in lines suitable for their requirements, which consisted largely of pieces, necks and good lines of lambs. SPIRITED BIDDING. The offering included a number of good wools which were well above the average quality for a season’s first sale. These were largely responsible for values hanging so well. The bulk of the catalogue was made up of ewe wool, much of which was carrying a fair amount'of condition. Early-shorn lot* were dry, having been held over by the growers in many instances in the hope of meeting a rising market. Competition was keen throughout with bidding on wanted lines being very spirited. At times the sale was most exciting, with fully a dozen on their feet frantically waving their arms to the tune of deafening shouts. Such scenes frequently created confusion, the auctioneer ahving difficultyin determining the bids. Disputes overbids frequently arose until instructions were given for bids to be ignored until a lot had been knocked down. The sale could be described as being the noisiest that has taken place in Napier for some time past. Frequently competition was well spread and at times buyers showed a determination to make purchases by hotly contestingf bids. On one occasion some humour was created by’ one prominent buyer coolly remarking when another operator was on the same mark to first catch the auctioneer’s eye, “id sixpence; that was vennice of him.” 10jD FOR SOUTHDOWN. The top price obtained in the opening caalogue was 10|d for a line of five bales of Souhdown from Weber. A few minutes later this value was equalled for another line of Southdown pooled wool which was classed and skirted in the broker’s store. The same price was again reached for an interlotted line of Southdown. Considerable interest was taken in the offering in De Pelichet, McLeod and Co.’s catalogue of the Tumowaitai clip. This consisted of pure Romney wool, one of Hawke's ay’s outstanding clips. A lot of super ewe wool was sold after well-spread and exciting competition to Francis Willey and Company. Fine quality and good styled lambs were eagerly sought after to reach 9Jd in several instance*. Some surprise was caused when the auctioneer, in offering a line of firs lambs, said, “I is passed to you at Bjd.'' "Well, how much do you want then?” asked the rather astonished onyer amid laughter. Poorer lots of Jambs were neglected and rarely exceeded 5Jd. Greater attention was paid to lots of necks to-day than was the ease at the January sale with the result that better sorts showed an advance of Jd or even more, these being lifted by the bench. The highest value was 8d for a fine lot under the brand of Otupae from inland, Patea. A line of Corriedale from Waimarama. under the brand of V.C., which topped the market last season, brought JOd. The offer of 6d for crutchings off high country at Morere drew a chorus of whistles from the buyers, who remarked, “He will he sorry.” TREND OF THE MARKET. There was the usual large attendance of overseas and local buyers. Competition was quite keen up to buyers’ limits, ar.d the sale I went with a decided swing. Most of | the wool offered consisted ot ewe wool, i and carried more condition than the ; two previuus sales. Super and good wools were on par with January prices, but medium and low grade wools were par to a shade easier. Pieces were on a par to a shade easier. The sale of lambs’ wools was extremely erratic, and barely up to January prices. Practically no hogget wools were sold in ' oud catalogue. Our highest price was for PUNAWAITAI over ECN, a pure Romney , clip. This clip sold on a par to prob- j ablv better prices than ruling at the j last sale.
