MEETING AT HASTINGS Greenore’s Great Surprise HURDLES TO ANEMOMETER Glorious weather prevailed for the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club’s spring meeting at Hastings to-day. The lawns and grounds were in most attractive order, reflecting credit on the custodian, Air, A. Holmes. Recent rains topped off the course, which was in excellent order, the going being very fast. Hie sunshine attracted a good attendance of the public and with both the members’ ad stewards’ stands made available after being completely reconditioned, the meeting has had restored much of the popularity it enjoyed prior to the earthquake. The public were treated to some splendid racing. Alost satislactory fields faced the stairer, Air. W. Price, who made his despatches with his usual efficiency. The handicapping was carried out by Air. H. Coyle, while Air. W. P. Russell was again in the judge's box, his decisions giving every satisfaction. The arrangements for the meeting were ably carried out by the secretary Mr. H. S. Moss, and his officials and the various events were got away well on the scheduled time. Popular selections played by the Hastings Citizens’ Band were appreciated by the public. Both the win and place machines were in operation on the toalisator. A sensation was caused in the second race when Greenore, carryonly two tickets on the win machine, returned a dividend of well over a double century. Aho started: 0/6 Winter Sport (W. Horne) 9.0, 4/4 Grumpy 9.0 (J. Webby), 5/5 Glasslough 9.0 (E. Deslandes). Winter Sport was first out and led over the first hurdle from Grumpy, Heliotype, Glasslough and Anemometer but as they entered the straight the first time Grumpy went to the front aaid led past the stand from Winter Sport, Heliotype and Kahunoke with Anemometer last. Round the nack Heliotype went up into second place, with Winter Sport falling baeji, but Anemometer and Kabunoke were whipping in the field. Five furlongs from home Grumpy still led the field from Heliotype, and it was here that Anemometer began her run. At the penultimate fence Heliotype ran up alongside the pacemaker and outjumping her at that fence looked as though she might come on and win. Anemometer was still going strongly and with heads turned tor home she began to make a decided impression on the two leaders. Grumpy fell at the last hurdle, leaving Heliotype in front, but she began to tire for Anemometer to easily overhaul her, and then Kabunoke, coining from the rear of the field, also went ahead. Anemometer won with a lot in hand by half a dozen lengths from Kahunoke, with Heliotype a further three lengths back and Glasslough fourth. Time, 2min. 47 2-5. TRIAL STAKES. Thane and The Grasper were actual'y first away, but when the field took up the running positions Thane and Silvei Song were together in front, with Ken tucky Song next just ahead of The Grasper, Black Magic and Greenore, the ultimate winner. There was little difference in the running order in the next two furlongs, with the exception that The Grasper had displiced Ken tucky Song for third position. This was the order into the straight, but when the field sorted out for the run home Greenore put in a determined challenge and going on well won by two lengths, with The Grasper just beating the favourite. De Friend was quickest to find Ins feet, with the others in al ine with tie exception of Blue Gaiter, buut jumped back at the release of the barrier to be hopelessly left. Within the first fur long Pakanui went to the lead from D<‘ Friend, Mesurina, Golden Time, Happy Landing and Parakeet, butu they were all handy to the pacemaker. Only four starters went to the post in the chief event of the day, as Slippery mid Cuddle were withdrawn Koyul Bengal wits first to show out from Brambjetorn, followed by Sunn) Sky and Chopin.,This Order was main tained out of th? straight and up the back, when Bramblctorn ran up along side Royal Bengal with Sunny Sky and. Chopin together in behind. The same order was maintained as they turned for home, with Royal Bengal dropping back and Sunny Sky on the outride* coming up. In the run home Brambletorn and Sunny Sky sorted themselves out and had a tough struggle for a furlong, when Sunny Sky asserted her self to go on and win by a length, with Chopin a similar distance awe third and Royal Bengal three lengths further hack.
