SCHOOL BUSINESS
Hastings West Committee A meeting of the committee of the Hastings West School was held in the school on Thursday, there being present Messrs L. J. Alackersey (chairman), A. E. Brooker, B. de Castro, J. Trumpet, A. Alatthews, G. J. Harvey, G. B. Britten, W. R. Clark and the headmaster, Air W. J. Driller. The headmaster’s report showed that the present roll was 365 and the average attendance for the month 3-11. The agricultural instructor visited the school last week and reported very favourably on the conditions of the grounds, the gardens and experimental garden plots. The first section of the proficiency examinations will start on November 21. The school won £2 1/6 prize money at the A. and P. Society Show, and won 24 first and eight se-cond-class merit cards at the Mana* watu and West Coast A. and P. Show Air Britten had undertaken to erect new supports to the plane tree in front of the school to give the tree a better spread. Air Jos. Wright tendered a plan showing improvements that could be made to the baths and it was resolved to obtain an estimate of the cost as early as possible. The baths will be opened flor the season on Thursday next. The preparations of cleaning and putting the grounds in good order will be commenced at an early date. It was stated that parents’ day would be held on December 13 and that the school teachers hud already started their arrangements for giving a good afternoon's entertainment to the parents. Accounts were passed for payment.
