Lee (Grey Lynn—Labour) gave notice of his intention to introduce a bill to empower the Minister of Defence to insist on the New Zealand w'ar Funds Council, New Zealand Red Cress and Canteen Fuud to distribute a greater proportion of their funds for the relief of distress among returned soldiers Mr C. H. Chapman (Wellington North —labour) ashed tue Minister of Employment whether in view of the lac. that September 00, 1034, the balance to credit in the Unemployment Funu amounted to £1,821,050 he would take immediate steps to increase payment,, to the unemployed

The Hon. J. A I’oung, in reply, said that while the cash balance in the fund was as stated the true balance, aftei deducting liauilities actually incurred but not paid, was approximately only £460,000. That represented only about live weeks’ reserve of allocation. It therefore would be appreciated that the board Lad no surplus reserves available to expend which Mr Chapman quoted. The House adjourned till the ringing of the bells to permit of a discussion between managers of the House and Council regarding a clause in the Local' Legislation Bill regarding a legacy left to the Hastings Hospital.

When the House resumed Mr. Young reported that an agreement had been reached between the managers of the lespectlve Houses. The Ht. Hon. G. W. Forbes moved that the House adjourn till February 13. This was agreed to. Replying to Air. H. G. 11. Mason (Auckland Suburbs—Labour), Air. Forbes assured members that the legislation the Government would bring down would bo ready for presentation to the House. It would be put through with the utmost dispatch. The legislation to be introduced would be lor the .Mortgage Corporation and reorganisation of the Native Department and native land settlement. The most important legislation would be that affecting the Mortgage Corporation. H was not possible to deal with such farreaching financial proposals in a hurried way. Air. Forbes referred to the most important measures that had been dealt with during the session. He congratulated the Alinister of Finance on the way he had handled the Tariff Revision and Finance Hills and the Companies Acts. He had showed a great deal of tact and ability in the way he presented those measures to the House Asked about the date of the general election, Air. Forbes said that he was not in a position yet to state the date on which it would be held, but members would receive ample notice. Some smaller measures might be presented at the autumn session, but no general legislation that would prolong the session. He conveyed to members the season’s greetings. Mr Al. J. Savage, Leader of the Opposition, reciprocated the Prime Minister’s greetings, and the House rose at 12.15 p.m.
