LOW &EATH-RATE
Climate and Environment
FACTORS THAT COUNT
American Doctor’s Opinion
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 19.
The question whether it is not quite probable that New Zealand’s low death-rate is due to climatic and environmental factors rather than any advanced sociological influences, was raised by Dr. G. A. Barker, professor of Geography at the Colorado State Teachers’ College, Greely, Colorado, in au interview.
Dr. Barker said that the low deathrate in New Zealand went on from 1870 and ante-dated tho low, birth-rate, so he did not really think the low deathrate was due to advanced legislation. He said that America had a very high death-rate, but that part of America which had tho lowest death-rate was that which had a climate most similar to New Zealand.
After comparing the climates of various parts of the world, Dr. Barker said that undoubtedly the lowering of the death-rate all over the world was a sociological factor, because tho climate had not changed. Asked if a plentiful milk supply had any effect, he said that it was true that in countries where high quantities of milk were produced tho death-rate was lower than in other countries.
Sociological selection might have had something to do with the low deathrate in New Zealand. It was a long distance from Europe and consequently only the hardier type of person could bo found here. In this respect ho compared New Zealand with California and Oregon in the United States, tho settlement of these parts having entailed a journey of great difficulty and' hardships, which had eliminated all but the fittest.
