Sub-Lieutenant H. S. Barber, 8.N., arrived from Home by the Tainui terday to relieve Sub-Lieutenant T. D. Herrick, R.N., on H.M.B. Laburnum.

Mr N. Solomon, formerly of tho Terminus Hotel, New Plymouth, han now taken over the licence of the Criterion Hotel, Napier.
Mr. and Mrs. James Coster celebrated their golden wedding at Auckland on Monday. The bride oi 50 years ago is a daughter of the late Mr. Robt. Martin, then a well-knowa farmer oi Hawke’s Bay.
Mr E. Hyde was reappointed by the Napier Retailers’ Association as its representative on the Napier Social Service Conimitee, following a request which was received by the Msociatiou at yesterday’s meeting.
Air-Marshal Sir Robert Clark-Hall, ouo ot Great Britain’s foremost military airmen, arrived at Wellington with his wife and family by the Tainui from Soulhuiupton yesterday. They intend to settle in New Zealand.
Mr J. S. Middleton, manager of the Christchurch branch of the National Bank ol New Zealand, retires on pension at the end of this year, and will be succeeded by Mr G G. Littlejohn, at present sub-inspector at the general manager’s office, Wellington.—Press Assn.
Mr. J. Ramsay MacDonald, British Prime Minister, who has spent the greater part of the Parliamentary recess on a health holiday in Canada and Newfoundland, will, according to present plans, sail for home in the liner Nova Scotia, which is due at Liverpool on October 4.
Mr, A. W. Nisbet, secretary of the Wellington Aero Club, was appointed secretary of tho Wellington Manufacturers’ Association by a meeting of the executive held yesterday. The assocition’s previous secretary, Mr. B. T. M. Edmonds, recently became licensee of the Hotel Cecil.
Mr J. W. Olphert, of the Napier Boys’ High School staff, who has been selected as manager of the team of secondary school athletes to attend the .Melbourne Centenary was granted leave for six weeks at last night's meeting of the Napier Secondary Education Board. He is to be congratulated upon his appointment.
Mr. W. Goodfellow, managing director of Amalgamated Dairies, Limited, and Mr. W. Dynes Fulton and Mr. C. J. Parlane, chairman and general manager respectively of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company Limited, arrived at Auckland from Sydney on Monday by the Niagara after attending the annual conference of Empire Dairies, Limited.
Mr. C. E. C. Gardiner, resident manager of the New Zealand Insurance Co., Ltd., Bombay, arrived at Wellington by the Tainui from Southampton yesterday on a holiday visit to the Dominion. Prior to joining tho Tainui, Mr. Gardiner toured England, Norway, Sweden, and Egypt. He is due back in Bombay in November. Before taking his leave he was chairman of the Bombay Underwriters’ Association.
Mr. N. Kettle is to retire on September 30 from the active management of the firm of Messrs, Williams and Kettle, Ltd. Mr. Kettle has been managing director of the company since it was formed, and the company is now in its 44th. year. Although retiring from the active management, Mr. Kettle will remain as a director and financial adviser. Mr. L. C. Rolls becomes general manager of the company.
Mr. G. B. Menzies, secretary to the North Island Licensed Victuallers’ Golf Association, has been presented with a set of entree dishes in acknowledgment of his services at the golf tournament just concluded at Napier. This morning the Mayor of Napier, Mr. C. O. Morse, told delegates to the annual conference of the United Licensed
Victuallers’ Association that because
of his organising ability, Mr. Menzies, with Mr. 8. P. Bpiller, was made assistant secretary to tho Earthquake Control Committee, and rendered valuable service. “The town owes a lot to these two,” said the Mayor.
