Fording River on Horse

By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 18. Malcolm Bruce Smith, farmer, of Cheviot, aged 37, was drowned while fording the Waiuu river about 4.20 p.m. to-day. Smith, with a buy, Lester I’uiri, aged

13, vias driving a mob of cows oier the river, which was fairly low. All the cows save two had been driven across, and Smith went back for these. He was driving them over when Pain saw the horse and rider disappear. They reappeared with Smith clinging to the saddle, but again disappeared. Smith has not been seen again. It is believed that the horse stepped over a ledge into a deep pool.
