HOLIDAY CLOTHES
SOME LATEST FASHIONS. "hen mentioning clothes, one’s thoughts turn first to materials and we find that great progress has been made with the mixed materials meant for holiday, wear. Linen tweed is, of course, to the fore and is now beautifully soft and nearly uncrushable, and keeps a happy mean between the tailor-made and the fluffy. Shadow-proof lace is another popular material, especially wheu linenfinished and creaseless linen is a great boon for trouser suits, which should be made with a box-pleat down tho front ot each ample trouser, continued up tho slightly Norfolk jacket, thus "icing length. Ihis year’s novelty is the Madras checked linen used for deck suits. It makes fgood beach clothes and comes in colours very much like sunlight itself in its different aspects—orange, red yellow, in liberal squares crossed with variegated lines; and here a touch of quiet green, there an unexpected dark band that is black when it crosses some colours and midnight blue on others Very fine jersey weaves are practical for holiday wear, and sponge linen is another favourite. Very amusing are the new bathing caps imitating huts, the kind which we were wearing last spring, made in cloth or tweed, pinched up here ami there in very smart-looking shapes. These aro made in colours as well as in the natural rubber, that curious putty, greyish colour which is all very well if it looks like textiles, but not at all sc good if it looks like hair.
Jumping from bathing caps to shoes, one finds a remaikable variety. There is still a liking for brown willow and white buckskiij, and some of the models are becoming to the foot, but each country contributes an individual shape. France likes bows at the ankles, Spain very high heels. England a heeled sandal and so on, and it looks as if wo arc to have a good choice, but we must remember that shoes have to be worn as well as admired.
