The quarterly returns of births and deaths in England and ales showmore births with a higher proportion of boys, more marriages and a notable decrease in infant mortality, but they indicate the cuutinued slow trend towards a stationary population. In the second quarter of 1934 live births numbered 156,636, an increase of 2,580 over the corresponding quarter of 1933 and equivalent to 15.6 per 1000 of population. The proportion of boys to girls was 1057 to 1000, compared with the average for the ten preceding second quarters of 1033 to 1000.
Deaths numbered 119,031, corresponding to the steady annual rate of 11.8 per 1000. Tho mortality of infants under one year averaged 55 per 1000. Tho excess of live births over deaths was three per 1000 below the average of the 10 preceding second quarters.
