The engagement is announced nf Aileen Gwynne, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Whelch, Lake Station, Waipukurau, to James Noel, elder son of Mrs. J. B. Laurenson, Christchurch. G.F.S. DANCE The St. Augustine’s (Napier) branch of the Girls’ Friendly Society on Wednesday last held a very successful dance and 500 tournament in St. Augustine’s Hall in aid of funds for the jubilee stall. The secretary expresses grateful thanks to Miss Betty Cooper and Mr Harry Walker, who provided music for the dance. R.S.A. BALL FUNCTION NEXT MONTH. The citizens of Hastings are promised a night of gaiety on. October 4, when a ball will be held in the As sembly Hall to raise funds for a very worthy cause—the Returned Soldiers’ Association. This association has many calls upon its limited funds from men who are well deserving of assistance, for many of them are still sutt'ering from the effects of the war. All money subscribed to this fund is very carefully handled and is very wisely distributed. By patronising tho Returned Soldiers’ Association ball a good cause will bo helped and those who attend aro assured of a thoroughly (good evening’s entertainment. Contributions to the supper, however small will be much appreciated and may be left with Mrs. T. A. Hill, who has again very kindly offered her services in charge of the supper committee.
