Activities of Town Board PAST TWO YEARS REVIEWED Many Improvements Carried Out A review of the past two years’ 1 ac tivities of the Havelock North Town Board is made by the chairman, Mr. H. R. von Dadelszen, in his report to be presented to the last meeting of the board to-night before the election:— “Roads. —Through the generosity of Mr. J. Kruse in giving the board an 8 ft. strip of his land, we were able to complete the parking area at the cemetery, where wc are now able to park 250 cars. Tanner street at both Pufflett and Joll road corners has been widened and built up where necessary. Fitzroy roud has been widened ami made much safer than previously Simla Avenue has been■ widened for its whole length, and a path has been formed on its north-western side, while at its junction with Te Mata road' a turning point for buses and cars has been established;' this latter was niaue possible by Mr. \V. J. Rusli, who gave it, of nis land. Duart road, Knox road and McHardy street have each uocu wiueucd and are much more safe ror traffic tuuii previously. Parking areas have been established on Te Mala road 1 tu Estuugh and Trinemaii’s, on Aapicr road, to Fergusson and Co.'s, and on Campbell ana Joll road corner. HillsLnook e.ulverl on Te Alata road was completed and a footpath formeu there. To Mata road at tho War Memorial was widened by 8 ft., while the side road between the Memorial and the Trading Co.' was widened by 12 It. All corners on Te Mata road were tarsealed; half; the village square was sealed and the material is now on hand tor the completion of this work.

“Footpaths.—The following ‘paths were tar-sealed: Te Auto road to first bridge, Napier road to Goddard’s Lane, all Hastings road, near Post Office, at Estuugh and Tronemun’s, -Middle road from Town Board office to Lucknow road, till Lucknow road and Te Alata road from Lindsay road to Guthrie road. A concrete kerb and channel were laid from the Village to Duart road on Te Mata road. New paths were formed on Duart and Ellison roads, Guthrie road and Campbell street; a track was laid on Middle road,, and a number of frontages were levelled.

“Electricity Department.—-This department has been running very smoothly throughout the whole period. A new Tirrill regulator has been installed and is giving every satisfaction; a floating boom was installed at the dslm to divert leaves and other rubbish from the intake of the pipe line and 1 has had the desired effect. Several new street lights were installed cringing the total number erected tu u-. A proposal tor community suop window ligating is under consideration aud if accepteu snould prove beneficial to the village. “Water Supply.—ln November, 1932, the water agreement with tne uusungs Borough Council was renewed 1 fur a turtlier period ox five years. 'Hie question of laying' a 4-inch main along Ellison road is now under consideration and should be completed before the warmer weather sets in.

“Domain. —The playing area has been enlarged, seats placeu in convenient places for picnic parties, water laid on, and conveniences erected. The Sports Club held its Easter meeting on the grounds and spoke highly of the appointments. Junior and school football was played on the ground, this season.

‘ 1 Cemetery. — Various improvements were carried out at the cemetery, including, sealing the main drive and various paths, extending the water supply, completion of parking place, the forming of a new drive and the levelling of the eastern portion (Blocks G, H, 1 and-J) of the property. “Finance and Statistics. —The •capital value of all properties in the town district is . £346,195, the unimproved value .being £133,124. The total public debt is £44,905 and the board’s assets are estimated. at £46,703. Rates collected' for tho year ended March 31 last totalled £3,1.14 10/8, water sold £231 10/6, electricity sold £3433 10/-, total revenue from all sources £12,990. “Public Health. —Other than four cases of diphtheria, no cases of infectious diseases were reported during the two years under review. Mr. D. Joll, of the board’s staff, qualified at the last sanitary inspector’s examination and has been appointed inspector to the board'. “Unemployed Relief. —Your board continues to employ all men who are registered at the Havelock North Post Office, and at present some 80 men are on the register. The local relief committee continues to do yeoman service in lightening tho load of our fellowcitizens, who aro for tho time “up against it,” by distributing meat, groceries and clothing, and to these good people qur best thanks are due. “General.—l wish to thank all those people who subscribed so generously to the 1933 Christmas Cheer Fund. All known cases of distress in the district were helped, and I can assure one and all that those who benefited fully ap predated the assistance given. “Fire Protection.—lt is pleasing to note that the fire insurance rates in the town district have been reduced as from September 1. This concession was long. overdue as, owing to the fact that ours is not a fire board district, the ratepayers and residents of the district wore called upon to contribute some £l5O toward the upkeep of the local Fire Brigade, while the insurance companies contributed nothing. “The term has been a most progressive one and I wish to thank all members of the board for the loyal support given nio. I also wish to thank the staff for the way in which the instructions of the board have been carried out.”
