HOW THEY RAN

Notes on the Runners (Special to “Tribune.”) WANGANUI. Sept. 13. The Hastings-owned and trained Royal Feast was made a good favourite for the opening event. He had every chance, being one of the first to jump out, and was the pacemaker with Redeem for over three parts of the journey, when he was passed by two of his opponents and a moderate third was his best at the finish. The winner, Flammarion, owned by Air F. Ormond and trained by F. Davis, was, after the first furlong, running in well behind the pacemakers, and when it came to the run home the Arausio get made no mistake in his finishing effort and succeeded in withstanding the late challenge from the Trenthain watchbreaker, Sunee. The Khedive was in about the middle of the field for most of the journey, but at the finish was going better than at any other part of the race. Redeem was fourth. Alost of the others ran only moderate races, but the two most likely to improve are Hunting Queen and Note Issue. • « » The Nassau gelding, Silent Bill, ran his best race to date when he accounted for the Hurdles. At the finish of today’s mile and three-quarters he was going on splendidly. Emotion, with his 11.2, ran a capital race. Ruanui ran a sour race. The other Hastings nomination, Kinross, was not nt the meeting. Red’ Sun and Calydon, two good gallopers on the flat, were having their first public outing over hurdles, and both promise to come more than useful with experience. « ® • Headmistress was always in the picture in the Putiki Hack and in the run home sorted herself out to dome on and win by a good length. Davistock. the runner-up, did not get as good a run as the winner, and is one that should do well on Saturday. Rest tan a fine race, as she was not too well placed in the first half. After the meeting she is to be sent to Otane for a short spell. Hukemanu was in the van for most of the way, and just when it was expected he would come on and make a bid he retired. King Thomond ran a fair race for fourth. Taitoru is one that should soon be back on the winning list. • c e Limbohm. the winner of the big race, put up quite a good performance. Once again ho was slow to find his feet, and over the first half-mile < uas oil

his balance a little, but once his rider balanced the Limond gelding he brought him along with a great run which the others went down to and the Hastings gelding won well going away from a very fair field Spiral, the runner-up, is of the same age as the winner, and last season was one of the best three-year-olds racing in the classics. As he had not raced since the autumn his second was full of merit to-day. Tiger Gain ran a fair third. Plateau ran a little better than at Marton, and was up close to Tiger Gain at the finish to weigh in fourth. Mercian Prince went to the front fnom the word go but retired when heads were turned for home. Beryl Latour ran a most disappointing race.

Passion Fruit made tio race of the Seafield Handicap, especially fiver the concluding stages, lie was not well away, but Atkins did not bustle him. When the straight was reached the Hastings horse was lying about fifth, and when his rider asked him for an effort he sailed away to bury the opposition. Rereatu, tho runner-up, has now run four seconds on end, and although he was unlucky at Alarton he had no chance with the winner to-day. Korokio ran one of her good races. Pomp was in a generous mood and was always well up with the leaders eventually to finish fourth Orapai, despite his heavy weight, "as installed favourite, bur was never near the leaders at any stage of the race. Mother Superior was a little on the big side and the race should do her good.

Cyclonic was made a very warm favourite for the six-furlong hack race, but the Ngatarawa gelding had little chance with the winner, Rerepai, over the last furlong, who just went away and left the balance of tho field to it. Rerepai looks like developing into a tip-top hack. Hunting Lodge did not get away too well, and under the circumstances ran a very fair race. Blue Boy ran a fair race, as also did Hunting Jay, who was again troublesome at the barrier. Hybiscus was never in the picture.

Once again The Tiger has run up to his very best form at Wanganui. He was quickest into his stride and led all the way and, despite a strong challenge from Good Hunting, won narrowly. Cadland ran a good race with his 9.3, but the Guineas candidate, Pin Aloney (fourth) and Burnish (fifth), were disappointing.
