OBITUARY

Mr. Raymouth Craven The sudden death of Mr. Raymouth Craven, a well-known and highly respected settler at Irongate, occurred at his home yesterday morning. Having enjoyed good health, his passing came as a shock to his many friends. The late Mr. Craven was born in Bradford, England, in 1870 and with his wife and two young children came out to New Zealand in the Athenic 31 1 years ago. For a few years he resided in Napier, where he followed his trade in wood-carving. Later he took over the general store and Post Office nt Pakowhai and in conjunction ran a carrying business. On relinquishing this he took up sheepfarming at Tangoio, where he remained for five or six years. In 1920 he purchased a farm at Irongate, where he has since resided. The late Mr. Craven did not seek public life, but served on the School Committee while at Pakowhai, being for a time chairman of that body. He was a keen follower of many branches of outside sport, and took a keen interest in all matters affecting the welfare of the community. Of sterling character and possessing a kindly and genial, disposition, he was held in the highest, esteem by the community. i He leaves a widow, one son, Mr. Edward Craven, and one daughter, Miss Winifred Craven, and to them is extended the deep sympathy of a wide circle of friends. The funeral will leave the residence at Irongate at 2 o'clock to-morrow afternoon for interment at the Hastings Cemetery. Sir Ernest Wild The death is announced from London of Sir Ernest Wild, aged 65 years. Sir Ernest Wild was Recorder of London and high steward of Southwark since .1922. He passed l his B.A. and LL.M, degrees with honours and was called to the Middle Temple in 1893 at the age of 24 years. Ho was h member of the London County Council from 1907 to 1910 and. was M.P. (CM.) for Upton Division of West Ham from 1918-22. Ho was Judge of the Norwich Guildhall Court of Record from 1897 to 1922. He appeared in many notable trials and was at ono time inspector of the Metropolitan Special Constabulary. He was Past Senior Grand Deacon of the. Grand Lodge of England in. 1928. He was knighted in 1918.
