LEAGUE OF NATIONS
INVITATION TO RUSSIA Considered of Importance OPPOSITION OVERCOME (British Official Wireless.) (Received 12, 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 11. The question of Russia joining the League of Nations was referred to as one of the most important matters that lately have come before the present Assembly in the broadcast address from Geneva by the Rt. Hon. Anthony Eden, who added that he was hopeful that the preliminary negotiations now proceeding before long would be sttccos •>fuily concluded,
It is understood that the representatives of the Powers taking the initia
tive in these negotiations are collecting as many signatures as possible to a telegram to be sent to the Soviet Government, in which the hope Will be expressed that the Government will en:er the League. The reply of the Soviet Government will come before the Assembly, together with a suggestion that the Soviet should be accorded a permanent seat on tho Council.
Newspapers state that the misgivings of Argentina and Portugal have not been entirely overcome, but their opposition probably will take the form of an adverse vote in tho Assembly, where unanimity is not required, and abstention from voting in the Council meeting.
