CRUELTY TO A COW
Case in Hastings Court
MAGISTRATE’S WARNING
At the Hastings Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr. R. 51. Watson, S.M., on the information of the SP.C.A. Inspector, Mr. C. W. Davis, Sydney Fanning was charged with failing to supply a. cow with proper and sufficient food. Mr. E. J. Hallett appeared for the defbendant and pleaded guilty. Mr. VV. S. Averill, for the inspector, said that the cow was tied to a rope in a back-yard, and was tethered near a hedge. There was no substantial feed available to it. The cow was bellowing for food, and it had been hungry for some time. ' It was consider'd to be a serious case.
Mr. Hallett said that the defendant was in poor circumstances, and depended upon roadside grass for grazing. It was not true, however, that the cow was in a bad way, as it had been giving a good supply of milk. His Worship said he could not take a light view of any charges of cruelty to animals, and fined the defendant £2 with £2 9,- costs. A month for payment was allowed.
